Who is against reform

Posted in DC Reform, Health Reform Policy Proposals by raisingwomensvoices on June 22, 2009

Paul Krugman wrote an op-ed for the New York Times today that gives an interesting view of the problems that are faced by policy makers in healthcare reform. He outlines the detrimental role that “centrist” Democrats have been playing in the forming and revising of proposed bills:

“What the balking Democrats seem most determined to do is to kill the public option, either by eliminating it or by carrying out a bait-and-switch, replacing a true public option with something meaningless. For the record, neither regional health cooperatives nor state-level public plans, both of which have been proposed as alternatives, would have the financial stability and bargaining power needed to bring down health care costs.”

Krugman asserts that it isn’t just conservative Republicans who are against reform and against an essential public plan option. This promises to continue to be a tough fight.
