Obama’s Budget and Women

Posted in DC Reform, Reproductive Health Care by raisingwomensvoices on May 7, 2009

President Obama has failed to strike government funding restrictions on abortion, including the Hyde Amendment, in his 2010 budget proposal.

The Hyde Amendment bans federal funding for abortion in the Medicaid Program, and Obama’s budget will affect the millions of women who rely on Medicaid and other federal programs for health services, including federal employees and their spouses and dependents, women served by Indian Health Service, women in the Peace Corps and in federal prisons.

This leaves women who are dependent on Medicaid unable to obtain a legal abortion if they so need.

The budget does, however, call for defunding abstinence-only sex education programs and creating programs geared towards reducing teenage pregnancy in their place. Several studies, including one authorized by the government, have found that abstinence programs are ineffective, either not delaying sexual activity among teens, or even discouraging use of contraception.
