The Abortion Choices of Poor Women

Individuals, including executive directors of the Abortion Access Project and the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the assistant dean (acting) for research and a professor of nursing at Hunter College, the medical director of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health and others have been sending letters to the editor of The New York Times in response to its recent article, “For Privacy’s Sake, Risking Do-It-Yourself Abortion”.
The respondents point out that more is needed in way of education about legal, safe and effective options to end a pregnancy. Others note that the original article’s statement that abortion is “safe, legal and inexpensive” can be misleading, as many women, especially in today’s economic climate, struggle to access care due to the cost of the procedure. One letter commended the article for pointing out that many low-income women face barriers to reproductive care due to the Hyde Amendment. Enacted in 1976, the amendments states that women on Medicaid are not covered for the cost of an abortion.
