House Approves SCHIP Bill That Includes Coverage for Immigrant Children, Pregnant Women

On January 14th, the House approved the SCHIP renewal bill, 289-139. Under the bill, an additional 4 million children and families will be covered. Included in the bill was ICHIA, an act which covers immigrant children and families living in this country legally. Estimated to cost $33 billion over the next 4.5 years, a 61 cent increase on the tobacco tax is expected to help cover costs.
The Senate version does not include the coverage of immigrant women and children, though Senate Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus (D-Mont.) said that he would support such a provision. Conversely, the ranking minority member of the committee, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), believes that extending this coverage to immigrants violates a “100-year-old law that requires new immigrants’ sponsors to pledge that the individuals will not become a burden on taxpayers financially”.
