Hospitals feel ill effects of recession

The loss of jobs, employment security and health coverage are all mounting concerns for Americans. As hospitals across the country treat patients who lack health insurance coverage, they struggle financially to stay afloat. California hospitals, like many others across the nation, are facing decreased Medicaid reimbursements, the closure of health facilities and a rising amount of debt. Elective procedures, which are usually profit-generating ones, are being scaled back by nearly 66%. Hospital admissions are also on the decline, according to a recent survey by the American Hospital Association.
