American Health Care Since 1994: The Unacceptable Status Quo

President-Elect Obama faces similar challenges and criticisms related to health care as former President Bill Clinton did when he took office 15 years ago. As health costs continue to rise and quality of care seems to diminish, Americans are yearning for health reform. Not only would health care reform benefit the millions who have minimal or no coverage, but it could also greatly benefit the U.S. gross domestic product on health care. Currently, the U.S. spends nearly double the amount on health care than do other countries. Roughly 16% of the U.S. GDP is spent on health care, while other developed countries average about 9%.
