Young People and Mental Health

Mental health is becoming a rising issue, especially among the young. A recent study done at Columbia University shows nearly half of college students encounter a mental health disorder, especially alcohol abuse and dependency. Other mental health issues that target young people are depression, anxiety, mood and eating disorders. However, mental health is still an important issue even for young people who are not students, “suggesting that the stressful transition from adolescence to adulthood can trigger the onset of a mental health problem regardless of setting.” The reason for this may be related to the stress and the pressure to grow up and finding a place in society, whether personally or professionally.
