“Doing nothing is not an option”

President Barack Obama has scheduled another town hall-style meeting to take place on Wednesday in Annandale, Virginia. The event will focus on questions from citizens submitted via YouTube, and will most likely focus on the President’s message that not acting on health care reform is unacceptable:

“Ultimately, your engagement on this issue is just as important as that of our lawmakers. I’ve always believed that real change doesn’t come from Washington, it comes from the American people — and we won’t be able to achieve reform without you. So America, tell me what you want to know about health care reform and I’ll do my best to answer your questions. I look forward to hearing from you.”

Some important things from the past couple days

North Carolina passes sex-ed bill: Yesterday, lawmakers passed a bill that requires all seventh through ninth graders to learn about “sexually transmitted infections, how to properly use contraceptives and prevent pregnancy, and “other topics such as sexual assault”. This is a great step away from the abstinence-only program that was in effect in the state until yesterday. However, the bill still allows parents to pull their kids from these classes, so there is definitely still work to be done. Read the full article on RH Reality Check.

Last night we attended the Health Equities Rally in Freedom Plaza here in Washington, saw some wonderful performances and speakers. It is really exciting to be here when all of these things are happening – there is great energy in the air. We heard Eleanor Hinton Hoytt from the Black Women’s Health Imperative (one of our partners!), Representative John Conyers from Michigan, and a number of citizens talking about the importance of affordable, comprehensive health care

In Eleanor’s words: “Today is the day I ask you to commit to raising your voice…to get the quality, affordable, available, accessible, comprehensive healthcare for everybody. We still have a choice to do something right.”

Check out the Our Bodies, Our Blog post about the recent Our Bodies Ourselves position paper that supports a single-payer system. In addition, Judy Norsigian and Jennifer Potter wrote a piece about the single-payer option being the best option. Some New York residents came out to speak about health care reform – many elected officials stating they fully support a single-payer system, and won’t support anything that doesn’t include a public option. This event was hosted by NW Bronx for Change and the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democrats and happened on June 13th. Read the full account here. Howard Dean (D – VT, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee) came out against the co-op option put forward by Kent Conrad.
